How Much for a Pound of Cuteness – Chapter 23

Xue Niannan truly lived up to being a top student, with unparalleled learning ability.

She had perfectly imitated Lu Jiaheng’s laid-back manner, from his speech patterns to his expressions and tone, capturing about ninety percent of his essence.

Gu Han had originally thought this handsome senior might have had some special feelings for Chu Zhi, and hearing this made her quite surprised.

She unconsciously glanced at Chu Zhi.

Sure enough, Chu Zhi’s hand holding a card froze, her face completely stunned.

The next second, her eyes widened, and her fingers started trembling uncontrollably, her expression even showing traces of fear.

Gu Han found it quite puzzling – could she be heartbroken?

But she hadn’t noticed Chu Zhi liking this “pink water cup” before.

Only Lin Tong seemed skeptical, looking somewhat surprised as she turned to ask: “Did he really say that?”

Xue Niannan nodded: “Absolutely true.”

Lin Tong had a thoughtful expression but didn’t say anything more.

After the October holiday, the sports meet was just two weeks away.

University sports meets were much more casual than those in middle and high school, and not everyone from each class needed to attend. However, since it was their first time participating in university sports as freshmen, the first-year students were still very enthusiastic about it.

Xiao Yi and Xue Niannan were in charge of registrations for the male and female teams respectively. The boys’ events were fine, with people signing up for basically every event, but the girls’ events were much more difficult.

Girls weren’t very enthusiastic about sports events. Rather than sweating profusely while sprinting on the plastic track under the October sun, they preferred spending two hours doing makeup and elegantly sitting under small parasols by the field to admire the fresh physiques and hormones of their male seniors and classmates.

That week, all the girls in the advertising class ran faster from Xue Niannan than they would from a high school disciplinary director – avoiding her like the plague would be an understatement.

While other students could avoid her, Chu Zhi, Lin Tong, and Gu Han had no choice. The three of them carried about half the responsibility for the advertising class two’s female team’s results, and were even praised by their counselor during evening self-study.

Chu Zhi signed up for the 200 meters and relay race. The relay was mixed gender, alternating between one male and one female runner, with four people total, each running 100 meters.

When Chu Zhi signed up, everyone looked at her short legs with doubt. The sports representative laughed heartily, sitting at Xiao Yi’s desk looking at her: “Let me tell you, little bunny, you look so soft and weak – can you even run? The relay especially needs explosive power.”

The little bunny blinked: “Yes, I can.”

Everyone just laughed and didn’t take it seriously, treating it as a joke.

But on the day of the sports meet, after Chu Zhi finished her women’s 200-meter preliminary race, the whole class fell silent.

Chu Zhi was assigned to lane eight. When the gun went off, the girl shot forward like the wind, instantly leaving everyone else far behind.

She wore a white tracksuit with white shoes, her soft long hair tied up in a high ponytail that swayed back and forth with each step. She really looked like an agile little white rabbit.

“My goodness,” Zhou Ming stared in amazement, watching that white figure flash past like lightning.

He patted Xiao Yi’s shoulder beside him, his words carrying hidden meaning, “Class monitor, your little sister isn’t someone just anyone can catch up to.”

The class monitor was warming up for the men’s 400 meters and didn’t respond, just flashing a grin at him before running down to the inspection area.

The gentle and somewhat shy boy had changed into athletic wear, revealing smooth arm muscles and calves, completely different from his usual image – heroic and energetic, his whole body radiating unlimited confidence.

The girls’ gazes on the stands were naturally drawn to him. Gu Han propped up her chin, shaking her head: “How did I never notice before that our monitor had this kind of different, vigorous youthful charm?”

Xue Niannan pushed up her glasses: “That’s the charm of sports.”

Chu Zhi had just finished her 200-meter preliminary and was walking back when she crossed paths with Xiao Yi below. The little rabbit didn’t seem tired at all, not even out of breath. Her body probably still in an excited state after running at such high speed, she jumped up and down a couple times, leaping up to high-five Xiao Yi.

Zhou Ming stood in the stands, leaning on the metal railing and letting out a long wolf whistle in their direction.

Gu Han quickly took sides: “Actually, I think the monitor is better than Pink Water Cup. He looks like the type who’d be good to his girlfriend. That Pink Water Cup doesn’t look like someone who’d be faithful.”

As they were all leaning on the railing at the front of the stands, after Gu Han finished speaking while looking in Chu Zhi’s direction, a lazy male voice came from beside her: “I’m very faithful.”

Gu Han: “…”

Gu Han was so startled she almost screamed.

She jumped back two steps abruptly. Lu Jiaheng was leaning on the railing next to her, supporting his chin with one hand, looking lazy and casual.

He didn’t look at her, his gaze falling on the girl who had just high-fived Xiao Yi in the distance. The little girl was smiling with curved eyes, and as the tall boy stood in front of her, she might have had something on her face, as the young man raised his hand and pointed toward the corner of her lips.

From this angle, his index finger was almost touching the corner of the girl’s lips.

Lu Jiaheng narrowed his eyes.

Gu Han finally caught her breath, her heart still racing: “Se-senior? When did you come over?”

“Just now, when you said the monitor was better than Pink Water Cup,” he said carelessly, his gaze still not moving an inch as he watched the little girl bouncing back, lightly climbing up to the stands, where the sports representative gave her a pat on the shoulder: “Nice job, little rabbit! You really run like a rabbit!”

The sports rep was tall and sturdy-looking, and his control of strength wasn’t very precise. Chu Zhi stepped back from his pat but didn’t seem to mind, still smiling happily.

Lu Jiaheng narrowed his eyes again, still lying boneless on the railing watching.

The sports representative chatted with Chu Zhi for a while before leaving. As Chu Zhi walked over and turned her head, she saw Lu Jiaheng standing at the front, blinked, looking a bit surprised: “Good morning, Senior Lu.”

Lu Jiaheng wasn’t wearing athletic clothes, still in his usual style, and Chu Zhi didn’t think he looked like someone who would be enthusiastic about participating in sports meets.

He didn’t speak, just leaned on the stands’ protective railing, turning his head to look at her, his thin lips slightly pursed.

That look had a strange meaning, like someone who had been cheated on, indescribably peculiar.

After the October holiday, Chu Zhi indeed hadn’t seen Lu Jiaheng again.

A University’s campus was so big, and with one being a freshman and the other a junior in different departments, their usual activity areas were quite far apart, so they really didn’t run into each other much at school.

Except for one time when she saw him near the gymnasium, Cheng Yi was talking to him then, and while the man was walking forward with his head down, just when Chu Zhi thought he wasn’t listening, she saw him suddenly raise his head with a smile.

Lu Jiaheng was about to say something but happened to see her standing opposite.

Chu Zhi stood there hesitating for a moment, feeling it would be better not to disturb them. Finally, she gave Cheng Yi a long look, turned around and left with complicated feelings.

Although she didn’t know much about Cheng Yi, from their interactions, she felt this “carrot senior” really didn’t seem like someone who would be into crossdressing.

Chu Zhi suddenly remembered a motivational post she had seen before, with one line saying that everyone’s current appearance is just a facade, and people only show their true selves in front of those they love.

Chu Zhi thought about it and began to feel that this pretentious chicken soup might have some truth to it.

Maybe when Cheng Yi was alone with his senior, he liked wearing little dresses!

In the face of love, any sacrifice could be sweet!

Chu Zhi had created her own dramatic interpretation, rehearsed three hundred scenes in her mind, and was successfully moved by Cheng Yi’s deep feelings.

She felt this love was so tragically beautiful!

Chu Zhi came back to her senses, turned her head to look behind Lu Jiaheng, didn’t see anyone, and couldn’t help asking: “Senior, why didn’t Senior Cheng Yi come with you?”

Lu Jiaheng had just witnessed the little girl being high-fived, having her lip corner pointed at, and getting her shoulder patted, and now he felt annoyed hearing about any member of the opposite sex. His eyelids drooped, lips pursed, his expression darkening a bit: “Mm, he didn’t come.”

Chu Zhi keenly sensed his emotional change, blinked and asked: “Did you two have a fight?”

Lu Jiaheng was stunned: “What?”

Chu Zhi carefully considered for a moment before tentatively asking: “Does he not want to wear it?”

Lu Jiaheng squinted in confusion.

Chu Zhi looked around, walked to an empty spot at the edge of the stands, and Lu Jiaheng straightened up to follow her.

The little girl stepped up one more level, suddenly becoming much taller, bringing her vertical distance closer to him, and began speaking softly, giving Lu Jiaheng her words of wisdom.

Whatever she said, Lu Jiaheng didn’t hear a word of it.

She had just finished running, and although she didn’t seem physically exhausted, there was still a thin layer of sweat on her forehead, and several strands of hair had escaped from her hair tie, swaying in the wind.

A strand stuck to her cheek, the ends of her hair brushing against the corner of her lips, those rosy soft lips moving against the stray hair.

The October morning sunlight was gentle and clear. From somewhere on the distant track came another race’s starting gun with a “bang.”

Chu Zhi licked her lips and concluded: “So, senior, you need to be more magnanimous.”

That sentence, Lu Jiaheng did hear.

He looked down at her with deep eyes, staring straight at her lips, casually humming: “How magnanimous?”

Chu Zhi thought for a moment and said slowly: “Well, some unimportant things maybe don’t need to be taken too seriously—”

“Everything is important,” Lu Jiaheng suddenly interrupted her.

Before Chu Zhi could react.

He suddenly raised his hand, his thumb landing at the corner of her lips, his fingertip slowly moving from the corner to the middle of her lower lip.

Soft and moist, a cool sensation.

That persistently unruly strand of hair lay between her lips and his fingertip, making a rustling sound as it moved with his touch.

Lu Jiaheng slowly moved his gaze up from her lips, meeting those wide, stunned clear black doe eyes.

His voice was a bit hoarse, low and raspy, yet clear and soft, speaking very slowly with smooth, low trailing syllables: “All these things are important. How do you want me to not care, to be magnanimous?”

Chu Zhi: “…Huh?”

Lu Jiaheng lowered his hand, his gaze very gentle, seeming to have fallen into some emotion of his own: “Hmm?”

Chu Zhi raised her hand to rub her lips, looking a bit confused: “What are you talking about?”

Lu Jiaheng: “…”
